Snowbird Return Checklist: Dryer Vent Safety After Months Away
A home that sits empty for months gives birds, debris and humidity time to work on your dryer vent. Before the first load of the season, run through this short checklist.

Short answer: before the first load after months away, check the outside hood for nests and debris, run the dryer empty to test airflow, and book a cleaning if airflow is weak or it has been more than a year.
Why dryer vents suffer while you are away
An idle vent is quiet and sheltered. Birds can nest inside a hood with a broken or stuck flap. Storm debris and leaves collect in the opening. And Florida humidity can leave lint damp and matted inside the duct. None of this is visible from the laundry room.
The arrival checklist
- Look at the outside hood first. Twigs, grass or feathers mean a nest. Do not run the dryer until it is cleared.
- Check the flap. It should move freely and close by itself.
- Clean the lint screen and look at the hose behind the dryer for kinks or damage.
- Run the dryer empty on heat for a few minutes and feel the airflow at the outside hood.
- Notice any smell. Musty means moisture; burning means stop and unplug.
- Book a cleaning if airflow is weak, a nest is present, or the vent was last cleaned more than a year ago.
Before you leave for the summer
- Clean the lint screen and wipe out the drum.
- Make sure the outside flap closes fully. A stuck-open flap invites birds.
- Ask your property manager or a neighbor to glance at the hood after big storms.
- If you rent the home out, plan a cleaning between seasons. Rentals run many more loads.
Condos and seasonal communities
In condo buildings on Longboat Key and Siesta Key, or 55+ communities in Bee Ridge, many units sit empty at the same time. A building-wide program timed for when owners return in the fall cleans every vent at once.
Snowbird dryer vent questions
Should I clean my dryer vent when I return to Florida?
It is a good time to do it. Nests, debris and damp lint can build up while the home is empty. At minimum, check the outside hood and test airflow before the first load.
How do I know if a bird nested in my dryer vent?
Look for twigs, grass or feathers at the hood, listen for chirping, and watch for a flap that will not close. Weak airflow after a long absence is another sign.
Can I leave the dryer vent flap open while away?
No. A flap that stays open lets birds and pests in. It should close by itself when the dryer is off.
How often should a vacation rental clean its dryer vent?
At least once a year, and every six months for rentals with frequent turnovers and heavy towel loads.
