Dryer vent cleaning FAQ
Straight answers to the questions Sarasota homeowners, renters and condo boards ask most about dryer vents, costs, safety and Florida code.
The basics
What is dryer vent cleaning and why does it matter?
Dryer vent cleaning removes lint and debris from the whole duct between your dryer and the outside, not just the lint screen. A blocked vent makes the dryer run longer and hotter. Failure to clean is the leading factor in home clothes dryer fires.
How often should I have my dryer vent cleaned?
At least once a year for most households. Large families, pets, vacation rentals and runs longer than about 25 feet often need cleaning every six to nine months, especially in Sarasota’s humid climate.
Is cleaning the lint screen the same as cleaning the vent?
No. The lint screen catches surface lint inside the dryer. The duct behind it, running through walls, attics or roofs, needs separate cleaning. That hidden duct causes most fire and drying problems.
Can I clean my dryer vent myself?
You can clean the lint screen and the transition hose behind the dryer. Full duct cleaning is harder to do well without rotary brushes and a strong vacuum, especially on long runs, roof vents or condo shafts.
Cost and scheduling
How much does dryer vent cleaning cost in Sarasota?
Most single-family homes pay roughly $100 to $250. Roof vents, two-story runs and condo units sit at the higher end. See the Sarasota cost guide for what drives the price.
How long does a dryer vent cleaning take?
About one to two hours for a typical home. Roof terminations, long condo runs and visits that include repairs can take longer. The technician gives you a time estimate when confirming the job.
Do I need to be home during the appointment?
Someone needs to give access to the dryer and, if needed, the outside hood or roof. Condo and rental jobs are often arranged through the property manager.
How fast can I get an appointment?
It depends on the local technician’s schedule. Call (941) 384-3600 and the technician will check the schedule with you. If you smell burning, stop using the dryer until it is checked.
Safety
How serious is the fire risk from a clogged dryer vent?
The U.S. Fire Administration estimates about 2,900 home clothes dryer fires a year, with failure to clean the leading factor at 34 percent. See the fire safety guide for more data and prevention tips.
What are the warning signs of a clogged dryer vent?
Clothes needing two cycles, a hot or humid laundry room, a burning smell, lint around the outside hood, and an outside flap that barely opens are the most common signs.
Can a clogged dryer vent damage my dryer?
Yes. Restricted airflow makes the dryer run hotter and longer. That wears out the heating element and motor sooner and can trip the dryer’s safety cutoff.
Condos, HOAs and rentals
Who is responsible for dryer vent cleaning in a condo or rental?
It depends on your association’s documents or your lease. There is no single Florida rule. Owners often handle the duct inside the unit, while associations handle shared shafts and exterior exits. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can a whole condo building be cleaned at once?
Yes. A building program schedules every unit in the same window and gives the board a summary of what was found, unit by unit.
Is there a discount for HOAs and apartment buildings?
Buildings are usually quoted per unit, and larger groups often get a lower per-unit price. Call (941) 384-3600 with the building name and unit count for a building quote.
Code and materials
What is the maximum dryer vent length in Florida?
Under the Florida Building Code, Residential, 35 feet, minus 2.5 feet for each 45-degree bend and 5 feet for each 90-degree bend. A longer run is allowed only if the dryer maker’s instructions permit it. Learn about rerouting.
What is the difference between rigid, semi-rigid and foil vents?
Rigid metal duct is required for runs inside walls and ceilings. Semi-rigid metal is a good choice for the short transition hose behind the dryer. Foil and vinyl hoses crush easily and trap lint, so they should be replaced.
Can a dryer vent end in the attic or garage?
No. Dryer exhaust must end outside the building, with a hood that has a backdraft damper and no screen. Venting indoors leaves moisture and lint where they cause mold and fire risk.
